The Different Types of DNA Testing Kits

There are DNA testing kits to help solve nearly every identity question.  Each one uses a person’s unique genetic fingerprint.

Types of DNA Testing Kits:

Adoption Testing

DNA Adoption tests ascertain the identity of a biological mother and father and are used as part of the relinquishing process.  The U.S. Department of State requires adoption testing in all cases in Guatemala.

Estate Testing

Sometimes the relation of an alleged family to the deceased is questioned, so in this case, DNA samples from the decedent and the relative can be tested for a match.

Genealogy Testing

An explosion of interest in ancestry has individuals having their DNA tested to determine their family tree.  Paternal lines can be traced thousands of years using a sample from a male member of the family.  This test requires at least one month for results.  A mitochondrial DNA test traces maternal lines and demands almost two month’s time.

Heritage ID Testing

This can be done prior to or after death to provide families with a DNA heritage to be used in the future.  If there are issues concerning health disorders, estate planning or genealogy, the DNA findings are preserved even after the person has died and been cremated.

Kinship Testing

A kinship test looks at an alleged relationship among family members, such as siblings and half siblings, grandparents and aunts and uncles.

Paternity Testing

The most common type of DNA testing, this determines the biological father of a child or children.  There are two kinds of paternity DNA testing; one that provides the information and another more stringent one that is admissible in a court of law.

Twin Testing

Whether or not twins are identical or fraternal will be determined in DNA testing kits such as these.

As you can see you have plenty of choices with the various kinds of DNA kits that are available.
